Announcement of the Rainbow Mission Foundation
At the time of Gay Pride, and our Gay Dignity March, we wish to remember the actions of the transvestite and gay guests at the Stonewall Inn, a gay pub in New York. These people had had enough of harassment by the police, and finally revolted against them. Yet Pride in Budapest is also an event which celebrates publicly coming out of the closet, and an occasion for showing others the diversity and color of the LGBT community. It takes great courage to stand up for our relationships, our loves, and our partners in our daily life. But the Pride March has a special mission as well: to raise awareness about and acceptance of LGBT people, so that one day no one will be troubled if she or he meets an LGBT person. The Pride March is not about its participants’ public display of themselves; it is to proclaim that being gay, which is a characteristic of our community, is not only a private matter, the only proper place for which is in private.
In the last several years in Hungary, once again the climate of society has been poisoned by ideologies and movements on the street that have brought fear to minorities and violated human rights. Because of these, and further, planned actions by extremists, this year on September 5th we will be talking about more than just recognizing the rights of homosexual people. The goal of this year’s Gay Dignity March is to declare our existence, and the existence of any other minority, beyond the possibility of a doubt.
We ask for the support and partnership of every democratically-inclined individual, so that we can live in a tolerant world without discrimination, where essential human rights can flourish.
